Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by her mother, her grandmother as well as her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder caused by words as a young toddler. Ford was attracted to acting in her teenaged years, and joined the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she was not a fit. Ford returned for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, after the fourth time she applied, she was finally accepted. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. He would go on to have frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however, by that time she was already making her television debut in the 1991 season from Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". Tate was on television in the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate was a regular performer on stage as well as a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate was first noticed for her stand up comedy in 1996.
